Facts About Alport Syndrome

Alport syndrome is an inherited disease of the kidney, inner ear (cochlea) and eye caused by genetic mutations that affect the type IV collagen family of proteins. Type IV collagen is a major constituent of important tissue structures known as basement membranes. Abnormal basement membranes in the kidney, cochlea and eye are responsible for the clinical features of Alport syndrome.
